Go on a journey through time and explore the retail landscape from 1850 to the present day, from the grocer’s round the corner and the advent of the supermarket to the web shop. Discover the history of consumption and distribution and be surprised by objects, stories and sounds from the little-known world behind the familiar display window.
What journey does a product take from factory to shop? What types of shops are there? What advertising tricks entice you to shop? And is home delivery really a new phenomenon?
This exhibition introduces you to contemporary purchasing behaviour, mass consumption and consumerism. You are also welcomed to a typical corner shop from the 1960s with stacks of cans, jars of candy and an old-fashioned balance scale on the counter.
